BC Premier Unveils Plan
Having just watched Gordon Campbell’s speech detailing his plan to support the British Columbian economy during the worldwide financial crisis, I am very happy with what he has unvailed. Cuts to income taxes for both personal and small business, the reinstigation of ferry routes that were cancelled ( particularly in the Sunshine Coast), help with pension plans, savings protection for all deposits in BC credit unions, among other things.
What I found unbelievable was not his plan or the manner in which it was presented (regardless of speculation that this was Campbell’s way of starting his campaigning) but rather the same two people that not only annoy, but have little to no sense of basic economics and social accountability: Carole James, and Jim Sinclair. I cannot think of two people that are more useless. As Carole James (who actually supports carbon taxes and has one in her platform…) rants on and on about anything that will raise controversy among British Columbia’s ignorant, Jim Sinclair rants on about the loss of jobs in sectors that have a shelf life or how the minimum wage should be lifted to ten dollars an hour. I currently make almost twelve dollars an hour as a student with no completed education as of yet, so why is it that Mr. Sinclair seems to think that in this day and age everybody works for eight dollars an hour? The market determines the efficient wage. He concerns himself mostly with individuals that are trying to support a family and only making minimum wage. Here’s the kicker: that percentage of people is incredibly small, and these people obviously made some incorrect life choices if they are making less than an eighteen year old fresh out of high school.
I understand that there are people who really can’t make enough money to get by on their own. Most of them end up on downtown streets or attempting to erect a tent in the middle of a public park. Yet still (unless there are good reasons for, say, mental illness other than drug abuse), I cannot find the sympathy to extend in their direction. If you are really trying to better your life, I will gladly help. But like I said before: life is about choices, and why should my time and money go to someone that could have made the same choices that I have, or the next guy for that matter. I’m no saint, but I sit here writing this in my own apartment that I pay for out of my own pocket as I attend post secondary. It’s doable if you try.
Okay, so back to Carole James. Here is a woman that thinks that being elected involves nothing but finding anything potentially controversial and attempting to exploit it, along with her crony Adrian Dix. She hasn’t had a valid opinion since as long as I can remember, nor has she had any good alternatives. Anyone can bitch, but she takes that term to a whole new level. Swaying people who have no idea about politics or basic economics is downright scandalous. People who vote for someone that promises the world like Carole James are the same ones that have no idea where the money to pay for all of these things comes from. These are the people in society that also seem to think that the world owes them everything, when in fact the world owes them and everyone else absolutely nothing. Moral to the story: EARN IT.
